The issue of climate change affects all regions around the world and is not only having negative impacts on wildlife, but also humans. We have all heard of polar ice sheets melting and how the sea is rising, but many are unaware of the impacts that climate change is having on us as a species.

In some regions, already extreme weather events and rainfall are becoming more common while others are experiencing more extreme heat waves and droughts(1). Climate change also affects the social and environmental determinants of health - clean air, safe drinking water, sufficient food and secure shelter(2)

According to the reputable CCPI (Climate Change Performance Index), “(Australia) remains among the very low performing countries and trails many other developed economies. Australia’s overall performance rates very low, as well as in the GHG Emissions, Renewable Energy, and Energy Use categories, and low for Climate Policy.” (Climate Change Performance Index, 2022, Country: Australia, para. 1)

The CCPI ranks Australia as 55th in the world for climate action contribution (with considerations to population size and regulated conditions to each individual nation’s participation).

With knowledge of Australia’s advancements across various fields in recent years, it is interesting to analyse our comparative lack of positive impact on the social issue of climate change. Fortunately, there is an opportunity for Australian people and government bodies to both voice concerns and take more effective actions in addressing this global issue.
